Your drain has probably seen a lot of action, it’s important to make sure proper maintenance is done in order to keep them working correctly. Smelly drains are a common issue we find when routine plumbing maintenance isn’t being carried out. Read on to find out why it smells and how to tackle the problem.
Why Your Drain May Smell
Reasons for drain smell vary in severity. Some smells can be caused by something as simple as food, but others are more complex and require the help of a trained professional. Below are some causes we at Dailey Plumbing are prepared to deal with.
Something many homeowners may not know about is the p-trap. The p-trap is installed underneath the sink. It’s purpose is trapping debris before it falls down the drain, preventing clogs from forming deep within the plumbing system. It also uses water to stop sewer gas from rising into the home. Over time as the p-trap gets dry, the smell from the trapped debris and sewer is released.
If you find that all the drains in your house are emitting a foul smell, it may be the sewer line to blame. The line could be damaged or broken. If the sewer line is damaged, along with the smell there will also be some gurgling sounds.
Improper Garbage Disposal Use
A common mistake homeowners can make is using the garbage disposal as a garbage can. This is not what garbage disposals were intended for and this can cause them to become clogged or even broken - resulting in a foul smell from the drain. Avoid putting anything down the disposal that doesn’t belong (bones, trash, large amounts of food, ect.).
A Clogged Vent Pipe
Like the p-trap, the vent pipe is used to keep sewer gas out of the home. The vent pipe usually goes out through the roof and can often times become clogged from outside debris. When a clog occurs, a smell will manifest.
